The outline
7 chapters, and what each one is doing.
Nothing is held back here. Build it with CreateEbook or build it in a word processor — the structure is the useful part.
The symptom they came in with
Open on the thing the reader already knows is wrong — the number that keeps slipping, the meeting that keeps repeating. You are not teaching yet. You are proving you have seen this before.
Why the obvious fix fails
Name the fix everyone tries first and explain, specifically, why it does not hold. This is the chapter that separates you from the blog posts.
The real cause
Your diagnosis. One idea, argued properly. If a reader remembers one page of the book, make it this one.
The method, step by step
The sequence you actually run with clients, named and numbered. Give away the what and the order. The judgement is what they hire you for.
A worked example
One engagement, start to finish, with real numbers where you can share them and honest ranges where you cannot. Nothing sells a method like watching it run.
What to do this week
Three things the reader can do without you. This is the chapter they forward to a colleague, and forwarding is distribution.
When to bring someone in
The honest boundary: the situations where doing it alone costs more than the fee. Then the call link.
Why this shape works
Three reasons, plainly.
It gives away the method and withholds the judgement, so the reader leaves convinced and still needs you.
The diagnosis chapter does the qualifying: readers who disagree with it were never going to buy.
Ending on a boundary rather than a pitch reads as advice, and advice gets forwarded.
Starting points
Three openings you can paste straight in.
Step one asks what your book should teach. Here is what a good answer looks like for this template — specific enough that the outline comes back usable.
- “The five reasons a services firm’s margin drops below 40%, and how I fix each one”
- “How I run a two-week operations audit for a 20-person agency”
- “The pricing conversation most consultants get wrong, and the script I use instead”
Other templates
Four more shapes.
