Learn the 3x3x3 from scratch in seven stages, then cut your solve time with speedcubing methods

30 pages · about 19 minutes to read · PDF

Inside the guide

9 chapters, and what each one leaves you able to do.

  1. 01

Meet the cube and what you will do with it

You see what the guide assumes, which cube to buy, and the solved state you will reach in seven stages.

  2. 02

Learn the six faces and the notation

You read and speak every move in the standard notation so instructions stop looking like code.

  3. 03

    Build the white cross

You place four white edge pieces around the white centre and match each one to its side centre.

  4. 04

    Solve the white corners

You slot four white corner pieces into the bottom layer and finish one complete face.

  5. 05

    Complete the middle layer

You insert four edge pieces into the second layer without disturbing the white face you built.

  6. 06

Make the yellow cross and orient the top

Split this section into four separate, detailed steps: 1) make the yellow cross, 2) solve the entire yellow face, 3) position the yellow corners correctly, and 4) position the yellow edges to complete the cube.

  7. 07

Fix the mistakes that stall you

You diagnose the five errors beginners make and reverse each one without scrambling the cube.

  8. 08

Cut your time with speedcubing methods

You learn finger tricks, look-ahead and keyhole or CFOP steps that shorten your solve.

  9. 09

Keep improving on your own after the book

You set a practice routine, time your solves and read records and cube facts that keep you going.

Meet the cube and what you will do with it

You see what the guide assumes, which cube to buy, and the solved state you will reach in seven stages.

You own a cube that has been sitting scrambled on a shelf for a few weeks, and you want it solved. This guide assumes you can turn the faces by hand, that you have around an hour a day for the first week, and that you have never memorised an algorithm in your life. It assumes nothing else. You do not need fast fingers, a mathematical brain, or a friend who already knows the method. You need a cube that turns and the patience to follow seven stages in order.

Buy a standard 3x3x3 from a known brand, not the cheapest thing in a supermarket bin. A cheap cube catches on every turn and locks up halfway through a rotation, and you will blame your hands when the cube is at fault. A cube with adjustable tension and a screw-adjustable core costs between ten and twenty pounds and turns cleanly out of the box. The coloured plastic version works as well as the stickered one. Wash your hands before you start solving, because grease on the surface makes the layers drag.

Work on a table with good light and keep the cube in front of you. Hold it with the white centre facing up for now. A solved cube has six faces, each showing nine stickers of one colour, and each face has a centre piece that never moves relative to the others. Turn the top layer a quarter turn clockwise. That is one move, and the notation calls it U. Turn it back and you have undone it. Your first move is to scramble the cube properly: twenty random turns, no pattern, and do not peek at the method while you scramble.

Check whether you have scrambled enough by counting the solved stickers on one face. A properly scrambled cube shows one or two stickers of the same colour on a face, not five or six. If you see five, keep turning.
